TRIGGERS VS. GLIMMERS: LEARNING TO IDENTIFY IMPACTFUL MOMENTS IN LIFE

Hello Calidad Familia,

Recently, I have been exploring the fascinating contrast between triggers vs. glimmers. You may already be familiar with the concept of triggers, but some of you may be wondering, “What sets them apart?”. Understanding their distinction can help you see greater beauty in what you feel, see, and experience authentically as you navigate this journey we call life! Let’s take a closer look together.

01. Triggers

Triggers are people, places, things, sights, sounds, or situations that activate an individual and cause them to feel unsafe, leading them to exhibit trauma responses, such as fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. Keep in mind that while triggers may very according to each individual’s personal experiences, they

02. Glimmers

Glimmers are the opposite of triggers. The term "Glimmer" was coined by Deb Dana, a Social Worker who specializes in Polyvagal theory. Glimmers are small moments when our nervous system feels calm, grounded, and safe. Glimmers tell our body and our nervous system that we are safe and well in the world. Think of a happy or warm hearted memory you have. Notice the feelings that are associated with it, the positive shift in your body, and the sense of comfort that it brings. That, my friend, is a glimmer!

While it is so important to understand triggers, we don’t give enough credit to the glimmering moments that bring a sense of peace and positivity to our lives, even if it’s derived from something small. Now that you know how to distinguish these triggers and glimmers, don’t forget to give yourself the space to pause and recognize what your nervous system in response to either a trigger or a glimmer. Write it down, breathe it out, and seek professional help if you find yourself struggling.
